Artist Statement:
In a place, there are an individual’s experiences, memories of life, and the history of a community. Each place has its own unique value, shaped by the personal sensibilities and experiences within it, and the meaning changes over time. MinJeong Guem imbues a place with the breath of individuals or collectives, bringing it to a new dimension. The artist uses the temporality of video media to create a video sculpture that forms multiple temporal layers of a place imbued with history. In the artwork where the past and present coexist, the audience’s experience is added, transforming the artwork into a place filled with rich and diverse stories. MinJeong Guem not only describes the place as a physical space, but also captures the flow of time, the changes in sensibilities, and even the social and environmental context embedded within it.
Nature, winds, trees, and plants are presented with different sensibilities in the artist’s work. The artworks presented in the exhibition are about the artist’s experience in a Hanok, a time of rest and healing. The sky viewed from the Hanok, harmonious with the roofing tiles and rafters weathered by time, blends with the chirping of birds and the sound of the wind, adding a sense of tranquility. Wooden structures and monitors, seemingly mismatched, recreate the experience of the Hanok and form an unfamiliar harmony, allowing the familiar space to be experienced with a new sense. The place and the changing nature within it are revealed slowly and deeply, inviting a more profound gaze. MinJeong Guem adds unfamiliarity to everyday places, reconstructs and recreates spaces, and imbues new meaning and value to the things we often overlook. Just like reciting a poem, diverse sensibilities come alive. |
