Database Management Basics

Database management is a system to manage information that is essential to the organization’s business processes. It involves storing data, distributing it to users and applications making edits as needed and monitoring changes to data and preventing data corruption due to unexpected failure. It is one component of a company’s informational infrastructure, which supports decision-making, corporate growth and compliance with laws such as the GDPR and the California Consumer Privacy Act.

The first database systems were created in the 1960s by Charles Bachman, IBM and others. They developed into information management systems (IMS) that allowed for the storage and retrieve massive amounts of data for a broad range of purposes, from calculating inventory to supporting complicated financial accounting and human resources functions.

A database is a set of tables that arrange data in accordance with the specific scheme, for example one-to-many relationships. It utilizes primary keys to identify records, and allow cross-references between tables. Each table is comprised of a set of fields, referred to as attributes, which provide information about data entities. Relational models, which were developed by E. F. “TedCodd Codd in the 1970s at IBM and IBM, are the most well-known database type in the present. The design is based on normalizing the data, making it more easy to use. It also makes it easier to update data, avoiding the need to change many sections of the database.

The majority of DBMSs are able to support multiple types of databases through different levels of internal and external organization. The internal level is concerned with costs, scalability, and other operational issues, such as the layout of the physical storage. The external level is the representation of the database in user interfaces and applications. It could comprise a mix of various external views based on different models of data and may also include virtual tables that are calculated using generic data to enhance the performance.
