Abstract:

This paper broadens the concept of “algorithmic art.” It draws on the research project “Algorithms in Art: Displacements with Algorithmic Culture in Art since 1990,” which studies an unwritten chapter in Danish contemporary art history about how art has developed with algorithms since the spread of digital technology. The project aims to establish a nuanced understanding of algorithmic art through an analytical mapping of Danish artistic practices since 1990. The paper proposes that rethinking the role of algorithms in art integrates art into narratives beyond aesthetics, objects, and artistic movements, focusing on how humans evolve with technology. It addresses the crucial relationship between art and algorithms, especially in light of current debates on AI and automation.
