Abstract:
This paper discusses an ongoing project utilising game as an art medium and method, to collaboratively examine how AI may impact society in the peripheries of the global AI ecosystem, in a playful way. The game focuses on Cyprus, a divided Eastern Mediterranean island, where legacies of colonialism and lack of critical discourse on AI’s societal impact perpetuate historical power asymmetries. The AI Colonialism Board Game [Cyprus] engages local communities through collective discussion and playful speculation, to collaboratively map the local AI power landscape, and create a community-created Alternative AI strategy that challenges current AI policies. The game is presented, and the results of playing sessions engaging with players of diverse sociocultural background are discussed. Informed by postcolonial, decolonial and intersectional feminist theory, the game highlights how collaborative art approaches can contribute towards critiquing hegemonic narratives about AI.
