Artist Statement:
During his travels as a war artist in Somalia with the Canadian Forces, Alan MacKay’s time was spent primarily in the operating environment of the Canadian Airborne Regiment. The timing of his assignment coincided with the events that led to the Somalia Inquiry, the torture death of a Somali teenager, and the attempted suicide of Master Cp. Clayton Matchee. MacKay’s startling and intense video serves as a backdrop to this dance piece staged by Calgary’s acclaimed alternative theatre group One Yellow Rabbit.
