M. Simon Levin is a Vancouver-based artist. He creates site-based systems that explore the aesthetics of engagement, using a variety of designed forms and tools that address our many publics. Working collaboratively and primarily within the public sphere, Levin’s work ranges from billboard projects, alternative tours of cities, land care centres and alternative mapping and telecommunication systems. His range of spatial and pedagogical projects, expand the social agency of art making, rethinking notions of space and place, authorship and audience.

Recent projects include a user-generated ‘sousveillance’ system and a global contributive new media platform, both showcased for Vanvouver’s 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Between 2007 and 2013 he was part of a SSHRC and CFI funded research creation project that examined the aesthetic, socio-political and spatial relationships between Vancouver’s False Creek and Dubai Marina. He has been artist in residence for Emily Carr University, the Vancouver Parks Board, the TechLab at the Surrey Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery (Public Programs), and at the International Art Space, Kelleberrin, Australia. He has exhibited, lectured and published locally, nationally and internationally. He has taught with Vermont College, the University of British Columbia and Emily Carr University.

M. Simon Levin has co-published images, articles and chapters for a range of publications and books including Westcoast Line, Prefix Photo, Imaginary Syllabi, collective echoes:public projects, Driving the Ceremonial Landscape, Cultural Mapping as Cultural Inquiry, and has published a curriculum on Contemporary Public Art.
