My name is Steve and I make things with language. Though primarily a fictionist, I’m a genre nomad at heart and follow the path Italo Calvino described in The Castle of Crossed Destinies:

“I always feel the need to alternate one type of writing with another, completely different, to begin writing again as if I had never written anything before.”

My books include the novel Of Fathers and Fire, published April 2019 by the University of Nebraska Press as part of its Flyover Fiction series, the short story collection Wifeshopping, which won the Bakeless Prize in Fiction from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2008, and the prose poem collection Thirty-One Octets: Incantations and Meditations, published by CW Books in 2014.

My digital works are the interactive romance novel Love At Elevation, published in 2018 by Choice of Games, the memoir daddylabyrinth, which premiered at the ArtScience Museum of Singapore, and the interactive film Talk with Your Hands Like an Ellis Island Mutt.

I earned my MFA from Florida State University (Film/TV) and have taught creative writing at the College of the Holy Cross, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and South Dakota State University, where I am associate professor of English. You can often find me online at Fiction Writers Review, where I am associate editor, and sometimes on Facebook and Twitter.
