Kate Durbin

Kate Durbin is a Los Angeles-based artist, writer, and filmmaker. Her books include E! Entertainment (Wonder), The Ravenous Audience (Akashic Books), and the collaboration ABRA (1913 Press). ABRA is also a free, interactive iOS app that is “a living text,” which won the 2017 Turn On Literature Prize for electronic literature. The project was partly funded by an NEA grant from the Center for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College Chicago. Kate’s novella Kim’s Fairytale Wedding (Cute Killa Press) was recently translated to Spanish and published in Mexico/Spain. In 2015, she was the Arts Queensland Poet-in-Residence in Brisbane, Australia.
Kate does performance art in public spaces and online. Recent work includes Hello Selfie, which she performed for the Pulse Art Fair in Miami with Transfer Gallery, in Union Square with Transfer Gallery, in Los Angeles with Perform Chinatown, and with Arts Queensland in Australia. Other recent work includes Unfriend Me Now!, about Facebook’s rhetorical wars, screened with Peer to Space in Berlin; The Supreme Gentleman, about Isla Vista shooter Elliot Rodger, featured on Art 21’s website; and Cloud 9, about female artists and money, commissioned by New Hive.
She is creator of the online pop cultural criticism journal Gaga Stigmata, and her tumblr project, Women as Objects, archived the teen girl tumblr aesthetic.
Kate’s work has been featured in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Forum, XO Jane, Nylon, Casa Vogue, Yale’s American Scholar, NPR, The Creator’s Project, Public Art Dialogue, ArtSlant, Poets and Writers, DAZED, BOMB, poets.org, The American Poetry Review, Flavorwire, Best American Experimental Writing, PennSound, The Pulitzer Foundation and elsewhere. She has shown her work or performed at The Frye Museum, The Pulse Art Fair, MOCA Los Angeles, the Haifa Museum in Israel, SF MOMA, Peer to Space in Berlin, The School for Global Art Down Under, The Poetry Project, The Queensland Poetry Festival, The Ashbery Home School, The Brisbane Writer’s Festival, and more.
In 2017-2018 she was a Digital Studies fellow with Rutgers-Camden University.
