Semi Ryu is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Kinetic Imaging, VCU Arts (Virginia Commonwealth University, USA), and a joint appointed associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, VCU School of Medicine. Ryu earned a BFA from the Korean National University of Arts, MFA from Carnegie Mellon University and is finishing up her PhD in Doctoral program of Information and Knowledge Society, UOC, Barcelona. Since 2002, Ryu has been working on virtual puppetry based on Korean ritual and oral storytelling. Her 3D animations, interactive artworks and papers have been presented at International venues of screenings, exhibitions, performances and publications in more than 20 countries, including Chelsea Art Museum (New York), Transmediale (Berlin), Videobrasil (Sao Paulo), Antonin Artaud space (London), ISEA, SIGGRAPH, the journal article “Ritualizing Interactive Media, from Motivation to Activation” (Technoetic Arts, Intellect Ltd), the book chapter “Sensing without Sensing”-The Point of Being (Cambridge Scholars), the journal article “Virtual Bodies in a Dramatic Paradox” (Virtual Creativity, Intellect Ltd), etc. Supported by VCU Presidential Research Quest Fund since 2014, Ryu has been working on Avatar projects for community engagement. Her transdiciplinary project “VoicingElder: Avatar Life-Review for Older Adults” has been presented in international venues of art, gerontology, drama therapy, and HCI. Ryu is the recipient of VCU Arts faculty award of distinguished achievement in Research, and had her TEDxRVA talk, “Virtual Reality for Han” at 2017. In 2018, She received “Massey cancer center” grant to support her current project VoicingHan: avatar life-review for palliative care, in collaboration with Dr. Del Fabbro and Dr. Noreika.

Her artworks and papers have been internationally presented in screenings, exhibitions, performances, and publications in 20 countries, including the Chelsea Art Museum, and the book The Point of Being (Cambridge Scholars, UK). Since 2014, she has been working on the project “VoicingElder: Avatar Life-Review for Older Adults” to support memory and intergenerational relationships of older adults. Her next project is “VoicingHan: Avatar Life-Review Empowering Selves”, to support the creation of personalized narratives for individuals with trauma-related memories. Semi is an associate professor in the Department of Kinetic Imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University. A South Korean native, she earned a BFA from the Korean National University of Arts, and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University.

Semi Ryu received her BFA from the Korean National University of Arts and an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (US). She is an associate professor in the Department of Kinetic Imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University. Ryu is a media artist who specializes in experimental 3D animations and virtual puppetry, based on Korean shamanism and oral tradition of storytelling. Her works have been widely presented in exhibitions and performances in more than 15 countries, and her academic papers, which have focused on the ritualization of interactive media, have been published in international journals and conferences. Her virtual puppetry was recently performed at Chelsea Art Museum, New York. She is currently writing a chapter for the book “Point of Being” (editor: Derrick de Kerkhove,) and is a senior advisor for the project “Avatars for virtual heritage”, funded by the Nationial Endowment for the Humanities.

Semi Ryu graduated with BFA from Korean National University of Arts and MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, USA. She is currently working as an assistant professor, Department of communication arts and design, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. Her works won international awards, such as ‘the best young animated film at International festival of animated Film, Stuttgart, Germany, “the first prize at Unimovie, Italy’ and ‘the second best animated film, Canadian International Annual Film Festival.’ Her 3D computer animations have been invited and presented at many international festivals, like ‘SIGGRAPH 99 & 2011, ‘Net mage, Bologna, Italy’, Transmediale, Berlin, Germany’, ‘Imagina, Monte-Carlo, Monaco’, ‘Rhode Island International Film Festival’ and more.
