Abstract:

This paper presents an innovative and transdisciplinary col-laboration that embodies the fluidity and cyclicality of cross-disciplinary collaborations that challenge conventional meth-ods of knowledge creation. The collaboration between Ji Hye Jung, a percussionist, Matthew Tyska and his cell biology laboratory, and Kendra H. Oliver, a artist-scientist, bridges music and scientific research, emphasizing the integration of sound, movement, and visuals in a live performance. Divided into seven distinct sections, the visual elements synchronize with Ji Hye’s marimba playing, reflecting the energy and com-plexity of the music and her movement. The visuals were derivations of the Tyska Laboratory’s state-of-the-art live cell microscopy movies, creating an experience that engages the audience in auditory and kinesthetic dimensions. This project offers one perspective through the collaborative process that could be shared with communities and prompt reflection on science communication experiences. This project challenged and expanded understanding of creativity, science, and re-search processes at the nexus of art and science, hinting at the transformative potential of such endeavors.
