Dr. Troy Innocent, Swinburne University of Technology, AU

Dr. Troy Innocent (AU) explores the multiplicity of codes in the contemporary mediascape, exploring the connections between language and reality. His work invites people to play in worlds that emerge from transmedia ecologies – complex systems of virtual and actual signs and entities. In his practice he has developed a unique aesthetic vocabulary that spans interaction, design, sculpture, animation, sound and installation. Innocent is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery.

Troy Innocent is a world builder, iconographer and reality newbie. His artificial worlds – Iconica (SIGGRAPH 98, USA), and Semiomorph (ISEA02, Japan) – explore the dynamic between the iconic ideal and the personal specific, the real and the simulated, and also the way in which our identity is shaped by language and communication. He has received numerous awards, including Honorary Mention, LIFE 2.0: Artificial Life, Spain (1999); Foreign Title Award, MMCA Multimedia Grand Prix, Japan (1998); First Prize, National Digital Art Awards, Australia (1995); and Honorary Mention, Prix Ars Electronica (1992). Innocent co-founded the digital arts collective cyber dada and through pioneering works such as Idea-ON>! contributed to the Australian new media arts practice during the 90s. His most recent works are urban art environments: an interactive sculpture garden entitled Colony in the Melbourne Docklands and Urban Codemakers, an Alternate Reality Game that reinvents the history of Melbourne. Innocent is currently Senior Lecturer in Games and Interactivity, Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, Swinburne University, Melbourne. He is represented by Hugo Michell Gallery.

Troy Innocent is an artist, academic, and educator investigating code in mixed realities, particularly its capacity to decode and reimagine the world in playful ways. He has presented at many ISEAs since 1992 (TISEA) and has a background in software and game development. His nonobjective art practice explores connections between geometric abstraction and code expressed in works of sculpture, animation, image, sound and installation. In 2017 Innocent was awarded the Melbourne Knowledge Fellowship to research playable cities in the Europe and UK, informing his public art practice of ‘urban code-making’ – a system he developed for situating play in cities such as Melbourne, Istanbul, Sydney and Hong Kong. Innocent teaches pervasive game design at Swinburne University; and is represented by Anna Pappas Gallery.
