    Dr Nigel Helyer is a sculptor and sound artist whose interdisciplinary practice combines art and science to embrace our social, cultural and physical environments. He brings these concerns together in creative projects that prompt the community to engage with their cultural histories, identity and sense of place; inviting us to examine the abstract conditions of our world and our complex relationships to it. Nigel is a board member of the Paris based Association Internationale de Critiques d’Art and is a prolific contributor to journals, conferences and broadcasts. He has an international reputation as a sculptor and sound-artist who creates large scale sound-sculptures, environmental artworks and interactive bio-art projects that prompt the community to engage with their cultural histories, identity and sense of place; inviting us to examine the abstract conditions of our world and our complex relationships to it. Nigel is the director of SonicObjects; Sonic Architecture and an Adjunct Professor in the school of Media, Music, Communications and Cultural Studies at Macquarie University, Australia.

He is the director of a small multidisciplinary team Sonic Objects; Sonic Architecture which has forged an international reputation for large scale sound-sculpture installations, environmental public artworks, museum inter- actives and new media projects. His practice is strongly interdisciplinary, linking a broad platform of creative practice with scientific research and development manifest as works that embrace both the natural and social environment. Nigel is a longstanding collaborator and advisor to SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia, realising such projects as GeneMusiK, the insect installation Host and as Artistic Director of the infamous LifeBoat project 2004-2006.

    Nigel Helyer (a.k.a. Dr Sonique) is a Sydney based sculptor and sound artist with an international reputation for his large scale sonic installations, environmental sculpture works and new media projects. His practice is actively inter-disciplinary, linking creative practice with scientific research and development. Recent activities include the development of a ‘Virtual Audio Reality’ system in collaboration with Lake Technology (Sydney) and the ongoing ‘AudioNomad’ research project in location sensitive Environmental Audio at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales. He is an honorary faculty member in Architectural Acoustics at the University of Sydney, and maintains active research links with the SymbioticA biotechnology lab at the University of Western Australia. He has recently been a visiting Professor at Stanford University and an Artist in Residence at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. Nigel is a co-founder and commissioner of the “SoundCulture” organisation; a recent fellow of the Australia Council for 2002/3; the winner of the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award 2002; and the curator of Sonic-Differences as part of the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth 2004.
