Locating Media

There is a utopian assumption that communications technology renders our physical location unimportant, but this fails to take into account how specifically ‘local’ cultural, economic, political and technological factors exert a powerful influence on available technologies and how we can use them. This theme seeks to examine how the specificities of location mediate and are mediated by both old and new technologies of information, communication and experience.

Reality Jam

Technological developments in representation have historically forced us to reconsider our perception of reality, and this is especially true of new media, where interactive, mixed and augmented ‘realities’ are rapidly proliferating. In this theme, we seek to encourage artists and researchers to explore the ways in which the ‘virtual’ presences and experiences of folklore, religious beliefs, magical rituals and science and media-fiction interact with and counteract the lived experiences of the ‘real’.

Wiki Wiki

Meaning ‘quick’ in Hawaiian, Wiki has been adopted as the name for open-source, open-access web documents that allow for multiple authors to edit, rewrite and comment on changes. It’s a model that exemplifies the kind of community collaboration that the internet allows. This theme will explore issues of copyright, authorship and responsibility that are now at stake in Wikis, as well as the innovative interdisciplinary collaborations that are made possible by this technology.

Ludic Interfaces

Notions of ‘fun’ or ‘playfulness’ haven’t always been associated with the development of science and technology, and yet the gaming industry is entirely driven by creating products that produce these kinds of pleasures. In this theme, we seek to address the ways in which fun and enjoyment interact with and complicate new media technologies both in their design, creative development, everyday uses and discursive articulations.

Border Transmissions

While technology held the promise of a `borderless’ world, in the current age our borders are more defined, policed and monitored than ever before. Technology is both a crucial tool for maintaining these borders through surveillance and databases, and also a major threat because of how it can pass information through zones of control. This theme addresses the question of how one negotiates technological developments that simultaneously contribute to the increasing opening and ossification of borders.
